How we got here

A little background on how we found our little piece of heaven in Alabama.  I happened to be searching Facebook for a blog that I had been following .  I searched for "little red farmhouse," and I came across this Facebook page of a little old run-down house in the middle of nowhere.  It hadn't been lived in for a while, the property was over grown and the house was unlivable.

I took a chance and emailed the owner, who said it was for rent, and we made arrangements to drive the RV in December to a little town just inside the border.  We drove by the house the day before we were suppose to arrive and instantly fell in love with the potential that the property had.  The house, on the other hand, needed a lot of love.

After meeting with the owner, hubby and I decided to take a risk and turn this place into something we had only dreamed of.  It would take a lot that first year to even make the house clean and functional for our family.  We are still working on the house, but at least I can live with it now.

The property consists of 133 acres that is completely wooded and full of trash.  I think people came here while it was empty and just started dumping all over the property.  We have hand cut some of the privey hedge without making a dent.  Finally, we had to hire someone with a bulldozer to come and clear some of the property for us.  It was just too much to try and do ourselves.

We are now in the fencing phase of the farm.  We have several pieces done, but we still need to make more room for the animals to graze.  This spring, I will be hiring the bulldozer again to push the woods back so I can grow more grass.  I know the animals will be very happy to get the room to roam.

We have fallen in love with this little town and the people who have live here.  We have found everyone we meet to be very friendly and helpful.  I have lived in the South a long time and always knew people to be kind, but I was pleasantly surprised by the level of kindness I found here.  People who stepped up to help us and never asked for anything in return.  I am not used to that.

I have many goals that I would like to accomplish this coming year.  Organizing this place so it runs more efficiently is a big one.  With all of the building going on, I feel like I can never find anything.  I also want to work on making a product line of all natural health care products.  That will mean experimenting on family and friends.

All in all, this move has been exhausting and expensive, but I am very glad we took a chance on this place.  We are able to raise animals for our own food, grow vegetables to share with our kids, and hunt to put meat in the freezer.  It was well worth the sweat and sore muscles.
